Researchers recently evaluated the efficacy of CBT for eating disorders like Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED). This systematic review compared cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) against various control conditions. These controls included waiting lists and self-help interventions. Furthermore, the study analyzed data from 42 randomized controlled trials. Consequently, the results provide a clear picture of current treatment effectiveness.
CBT outperformed waitlist controls significantly in the meta-analysis. Patients receiving CBT achieved remission at over three times the rate of those on waitlists. Notably, the therapy also reduced binge-eating frequency with a large effect size. However, the benefits were less pronounced when researchers compared CBT to guided self-help. Specifically, remission rates remained higher for CBT, but binge frequency reduction was comparable between both groups. Therefore, clinicians must consider the specific comparator when evaluating therapy outcomes.
The study also highlighted a lack of data regarding other inactive comparators. For instance, few trials compared CBT to pill placebos or treatment as usual (TAU). This scarcity makes it difficult to assess absolute efficacy. Nevertheless, the findings reinforce CBT as a primary intervention for BN and BED. Practitioners in India should note that while CBT remains superior to no treatment, low-intensity self-help can also offer significant benefits. These findings suggest a stepped-care approach may be efficient in resource-limited settings.

Guided self-help shows comparable results to CBT in reducing the frequency of binge eating. However, therapist-led CBT still results in higher overall remission rates for most patients.
