Moreover, the administrative burden of switching stable patients creates significant friction for rheumatology practices. In the Indian market, where adalimumab biosimilars like Exemptia have long been available, these findings underscore the need for proactive patient education to manage expectations and ensure therapy adherence.
Furthermore, data from Medicare patients showed smaller but more stable increases in prescribing without the sharp subsequent drops seen in commercial plans. This suggests that different payer structures and patient demographics may influence the success of a biosimilar transition. To improve the landscape of biosimilar adalimumab prescribing, healthcare systems must prioritize communication strategies that address patient concerns. By mitigating the psychological and logistical hurdles of switching, providers can better realize the substantial cost savings offered by biosimilar technologies.
The switchback phenomenon, where patients return to the originator biologic, is often driven by the nocebo effect. Patients may report subjective symptoms or perceived lack of efficacy after switching, even when the biosimilar is pharmacologically equivalent.
Clinicians can improve adoption rates by implementing structured patient education programs. Specifically, explaining the rigorous approval process for biosimilars and managing expectations about the switch can reduce negative perceptions and improve long-term retention.
