At the molecular level, aged tissues exhibit a rise in genes and proteins involved in microbial sensing and inflammation. This phenomenon, often termed \"inflammaging,\" creates a persistent low-grade inflammatory state. Furthermore, there is an increase in cellular senescence, where cells stop dividing but continue to release harmful pro-inflammatory signals. Meanwhile, researchers have observed a reduction in structural proteins and bone formation markers. Therefore, metabolic regulation in the periodontium becomes increasingly compromised as a person grows older.
