Maintaining a dry field is essential for successful adhesive restorations in clinical dentistry. However, unexpected saliva contamination often compromises the bond interface. A recent study evaluated the efficacy of a 10-MDP-containing cleaner, specifically Katana Cleaner, on the shear bond strength (SBS) to dentin. This research provides critical evidence for clinicians managing contamination during restorative procedures.
The study utilized human dentin samples to compare various treatment groups under immediate and aged conditions. Results indicated that saliva contamination significantly reduces long-term bond strength, particularly after artificial aging. While the 10-MDP-containing cleaner did not completely restore bond strength to control levels, it proved safe for the tooth structure. Furthermore, the cleaner showed a positive trend in mitigating some adverse effects caused by salivary proteins.

If contamination occurs, a 10-MDP-containing cleaner can safely decontaminate the surface without damaging the dentin structure. Although it may not fully reverse the strength loss, it helps maintain the integrity of the bonded interface over time.
