This 24-week, double-blind, randomized trial evaluated adjunctive sulforaphane versus placebo in patients with chronic schizophrenia and significant negative symptoms, while existing antipsychotic regimens remained unchanged. A total of 42 patients were included in the statistical analysis: 28 received sulforaphane and 14 received placebo. Sulforaphane significantly reduced the negative-symptom score derived from the five-factor Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) model compared with placebo (p=0.007), with a significant time-by-treatment-group interaction (p=0.023). The between-group difference in negative symptoms was more pronounced at 12 weeks than at 24 weeks. A significant improvement was also observed in the original PANSS negative-symptom score (p=0.029). However, sulforaphane did not significantly improve the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery composite score or its individual subscores, indicating no demonstrated benefit for cognitive impairment in this trial. The authors concluded that sulforaphane may have potential as an adjunctive intervention for negative symptoms in chronic schizophrenia, but its cognitive benefits remain unproven. Larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm its efficacy, establish the durability of symptom improvement and clarify its clinical role.

New research reveals that non-ablative radiotherapy suppresses ventricular tachycardia by increasing conduction velocity via NaV1.5 upregulation and action potential prolongation. However, sustained sodium current elevation and depressed calcium handling highlight the need for careful clinical translation.
