The five-year STAMPEDE follow-up compared intensive medical and lifestyle therapy with bariatric surgical procedures in patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity. The study showed that surgery provided more durable improvement in glycemic control and greater reductions in diabetes medication use than medical therapy alone.
