VISUAL II was a multicentre phase 3 randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluating adalimumab in adults with inactive, non-infectious intermediate, posterior or panuveitis controlled with systemic corticosteroids. Patients were assigned to adalimumab or placebo while prednisone was tapered. Treatment failure occurred significantly less often in the adalimumab group, and time to treatment failure was substantially prolonged. The result supports TNF inhibition as an effective steroid-sparing strategy for patients whose posterior non-infectious uveitis is controlled but remains at risk of recurrence when corticosteroids are reduced.
