Recent research identifies a significant link between uric acid osteoporosis risk. Scientists analyzed data from the 2015-2020 NHANES and conducted Mendelian randomization to understand how serum uric acid (SUA) influences bone health. Consequently, they found that higher SUA levels correlate with a reduced risk of osteoporosis.
The cross-sectional study included 6,020 participants. Individuals in the highest SUA quartiles showed a 49% lower risk compared to those in the lowest quartile. Furthermore, restricted cubic spline analysis revealed an L-shaped relationship. The study pinpointed a turning point at approximately 5.3 mg/dL. This suggests that maintaining moderate SUA levels might provide a protective effect against bone loss.
Subgroup analysis indicated that sex, race, and diabetes status are essential modifiers. Additionally, the Mendelian randomization analysis explored whether these findings represent a causal relationship. Although SUA is often associated with gout, its antioxidant properties may actually benefit bone metabolism. Therefore, physicians should consider these nuances when managing patients with metabolic disorders. Moreover, the study highlights the need for balanced clinical strategies regarding urate-lowering therapies.
