Surgeons frequently encounter challenges when managing tibial plateau fractures with articular depression. Consequently, a study recently published in Surgical Innovation introduces a novel Tibial plateau fracture grafting technique. This method uses crushed cancellous allograft to fill metaphyseal defects efficiently. Furthermore, it addresses the common issue of articular subsidence following reduction.
The procedure involves using multiple 3 mL syringes to introduce crushed cancellous allograft into the identified tibial defects. Subsequently, the surgeon performs bone tamping to create a structural, packed bed of allograft. This approach ensures a dense fill within the void created after restoring the articular surface. Moreover, the use of syringes allows for precise delivery of the grafting material.
Researchers conducted a retrospective study on sixteen patients with traumatic, closed fractures who underwent this procedure. All sixteen cases eventually achieved bone union, as verified by radiographic evaluation. Additionally, patients exhibited minimal subsidence of the articular surface throughout the 12-month follow-up period. Therefore, this technique offers a reliable solution for maintaining joint stability.
