Many preterm infants struggle with developing the neurological and motor coordination required for oral feeding. Consequently, clinical teams are investigating innovative ways to support this developmental milestone. One promising intervention is oropharyngeal colostrum administration. This procedure involves applying maternal colostrum directly to the infant's oral mucosa to stimulate oral sensations and provide immunological benefits.
Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) involving 60 premature neonates born between 26 and 33 weeks of gestation. Specifically, the team divided the infants into an oral colostrum group and a control group. The intervention group received 0.2 mL of maternal colostrum periodically. In contrast, the control group received standard routine care without the specific colostrum application. The study monitored progress for seven days using standardized assessment tools.
The results revealed significant improvements in the intervention group. After the intervention period, infants who received colostrum achieved substantially higher scores on the Early Feeding Skills (EFS) Assessment Tool. Furthermore, these infants transitioned to full oral feeding significantly faster than those in the control group. This accelerated transition helps reduce the length of hospital stays and decreases the risk of long-term feeding complications.
Additionally, the application of colostrum provides vital immunological support. Although the primary focus of this study was feeding skills, colostrum naturally contains bioactive factors that protect the oral mucosa and stimulate the immune system. Therefore, implementing this simple, low-cost practice can enhance neonatal care standards in intensive care units globally.
In this clinical study, researchers used a volume of 0.2 mL of maternal colostrum. This small amount effectively coats the oral mucosa without causing any respiratory distress or aspiration risks for the neonate.
The procedure likely enhances oral sensitivity and improves the coordination of sucking and swallowing. By stimulating the oropharynx, infants develop the necessary motor skills earlier than they would with standard care alone.
