Autism remains significantly under-detected and under-studied within Indigenous communities globally. During the 2025 International Society for Autism Research (INSAR) meeting in Seattle, a Special Interest Group (SIG) convened to address these gaps. Their discussions centered on the future of Indigenous autism research and the urgent need for a shift in methodological paradigms. Participants included Autistic self-advocates, service providers, and academics who shared diverse international perspectives on neurodiversity.
Current research frameworks often rely on Western models that may not align with Indigenous worldviews. Consequently, the emergent themes from the SIG emphasized decolonized and culturally informed approaches. Researchers must move away from deficit-based narratives. Instead, they should adopt strengths-based models that honor Indigenous knowledge systems. Furthermore, integrating these traditional systems with Western evidence-based practices can create a more holistic support structure for Autistic individuals in these communities.
Relationship-building stands as a cornerstone for future success. The results of the content analysis highlighted that building trust is non-negotiable. Historically, extractive research practices have led to community skepticism. Therefore, fostering long-term collaborative partnerships is essential. Additionally, there is a strong desire for more Indigenous-led initiatives. In these models, non-Indigenous researchers provide technical support while the community retains leadership and agency over the data.
Systemic factors often limit the reach of effective autism services in Indigenous areas. For instance, geographical isolation and a lack of culturally sensitive diagnostic tools contribute to late identification. Addressing these factors requires a concerted effort to dismantle colonial biases in healthcare. Moreover, researchers must focus on training local service providers to bridge the gap between clinical requirements and community expectations. Ultimately, shifting toward community-led research ensures that interventions are relevant and sustainable.
Decolonizing research is vital because it removes colonial biases that often pathologize Indigenous behaviors. It allows for the integration of traditional knowledge, ensuring that diagnoses and supports are culturally relevant and respectful.
Clinicians can build trust by engaging in long-term relationship-building rather than one-off interactions. They should prioritize community-led goals, demonstrate transparency, and ensure that the research benefits the community directly.
