Recent behavioral research investigates the factors driving interpersonal conflict in young males. A pivotal study examined how hegemonic masculinity and aggression correlate with empathy levels in emerging adult men. Traditionally, psychologists believed that high empathy levels act as a primary barrier against hostile behavior. However, the study findings suggest that social norms significantly moderate this protective relationship.
Consequently, even highly empathetic men may display verbal aggression if they strongly adhere to traditional masculine ideals. Furthermore, the research utilized a sample of 109 Australian men with an average age of 24.3 years. Participants completed validated assessments including the Interpersonal Reactivity Index and the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory-29. Notably, the results revealed that adherence to rigid masculine standards was positively associated with verbal aggression.
Therefore, clinicians must consider the impact of societal gender roles when addressing behavioral health issues. These insights emphasize the need for a dual approach in psychological interventions. Specifically, practitioners should combine empathy-building exercises with programs that promote healthy masculinity. By addressing the root of rigid gender norms, we can more effectively reduce aggression in this population. Moreover, addressing these norms helps men navigate emotional responses without resorting to hostility.
Traditional masculine norms often emphasize dominance and emotional restriction. Consequently, these norms can lead men to express frustration through verbal aggression rather than empathy or open communication.
Empathy training is beneficial but may be less effective if rigid masculine norms remain unaddressed. Therefore, combining empathy development with discussions on healthy masculinity offers a more comprehensive approach to behavioral change.
