Public mental health education in India often feels clinic-framed and text-heavy. To address this, Augmenta Health introduced GrowLu, a novel public mental health micro-infrastructure. This initiative reimagines the traditional Indian Dussehra Golu as a secular, guided installation. Consequently, it creates a stigma-safe space for mental health engagement within everyday civic environments.
The GrowLu design utilizes five ascending tiers to map Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Specifically, these tiers cover physiological needs, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Each tier features familiar cultural artifacts and standardized microcopy cards. Furthermore, the "one object-one idea-one action" principle encourages visitors to make brief, voiced micro-commitments. Therefore, the exhibit effectively transforms passive observation into active participation.
Adherence to the AAAQ framework ensures high-quality delivery. For example, availability is maintained through low-cost portability. Accessibility involves free walk-up access at eye-level for all ages. Acceptability comes from using non-pathologizing, secular content. Finally, quality is guaranteed through facilitator training and fidelity checklists. These elements combined make the public mental health micro-infrastructure highly effective for heterogeneous audiences in high-footfall settings.
GrowLu debuted at the Mental Health Santhe 4.0 in Bengaluru during October 2025. This event was hosted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS). During the two-day period, the exhibit reached over 5,000 visitors. Moreover, the QR-linked reading guide generated approximately 10,500 scans. Most visitors spent between 45 to 60 seconds engaging with the installation. This dwell time allowed volunteers to invite participants to name one feasible next step for their personal mental wellbeing.
GrowLu is a portmanteau of "Grow" and "Golu." It represents the growth of mental health awareness through the cultural scaffold of the Indian Golu display.
The AAAQ framework ensures that health interventions are Available, Accessible, Acceptable, and of high Quality. For GrowLu, this means using portable designs, providing free access, ensuring secular content, and maintaining standardized captions with trained facilitators.
