Moreover, the study reported an increase in microglia within the hippocampus and amygdala. These brain regions are critical for memory and emotional processing. Consequently, prolonged exposure to 2EH might contribute to the cognitive symptoms often reported in sick building syndrome.
Furthermore, the skin is not immune to these toxic effects. The researchers observed an increase in fibroblasts in the dorsal skin across all exposure levels. This indicates a systemic response to the inhaled VOC. Because 2EH can be released from flooring for over a decade, these results emphasize the importance of monitoring indoor air pollutants. Clinicians should consider environmental exposures when patients present with persistent respiratory or neurological complaints.
