Heart failure continues to be a global healthcare challenge, particularly within aging populations and resource-limited regions like India. To address this, researchers have developed a novel colorimetric sensing technique called CQmiR for early heart failure diagnosis. By targeting heart failure-specific microRNAs (miRNAs) in whole blood, this technology offers a rapid and quantitative solution for clinical assessment. MicroRNAs serve as highly stable and specific biomarkers, reflecting the underlying pathological changes in cardiac tissue before symptoms become severe.
The CQmiR system utilizes a specialized nanoprobe patch coated with RNA-binding proteins. Furthermore, this patch efficiently extracts miRNAs directly from complex biological samples such as whole blood. After extraction, the system employs loop-mediated isothermal amplification to amplify the genetic material on a chip. Consequently, clinicians can achieve sub-femtomolar sensitivity and single-nucleotide specificity within just two hours. This process does not require any sophisticated lab equipment, making it ideal for point-of-care use.
In a recent rodent model study, this approach successfully detected molecular risks associated with heart failure before the onset of symptoms. Specifically, researchers highlighted the critical roles of miR-652-3p and miR-30e-5p as primary indicators. Because the test is low-cost and highly efficient, it holds significant potential for large-scale screening. Therefore, this innovation could transform how we manage cardiovascular health by moving diagnostics closer to the patient’s home.
MicroRNAs are small non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression. In heart failure, specific miRNAs like miR-652-3p are released into the blood, acting as early warning signals of cardiac stress before physical symptoms appear.
Yes, the CQmiR assay is designed for non-clinical environments. Since it uses a colorimetric sensing technique and does not require expensive laboratory hardware, it is suitable for community health centers or primary clinics.

An 11-year Swedish registry study of 618 uterine sarcoma patients found that minimally invasive surgery yielded survival comparable to open surgery in early stages. However, adjuvant chemotherapy conferred no survival benefit in localized or advanced disease, highlighting stage and histology as key outcomes.
